On Tuesday, we had a visit from Nolan and Leanne Hill who work with the Salvation Army. They are based in the North East Valley.
Their message was that we need to think of OTHERS! We can look after people who are less fortunate than us.
They told us about the history of the Salvation Army. They brought along some bonnets and clothes from the old days - some children got to put them on. Lara in our class wore a very lovely bonnet! In days gone by the people in the Salvation Army got a really hard time from others. They liked to make a lot of noise playing musical instruments like tamborines and trumpets to bring attention to themselves - lots of people tried to stop them and threw tomatoes at them! Oh no!

Hannah's story about the Salvation Army
The Salvation Army are people who help other people. They get shoes, books and more. They are compassionate to other people. They went up to Christchurch and gave food to people in Christchurch. The Salvation Army made heaps of noise while the Skeleton Army threw tomatoes at the Salvation Army to make the Salvation Army stop. People ran over to a box and put food into it.

Playhouse Theatre - Phone a Friend
Playhouse Theatre - Phone a Friend
Today we had a visit from the Playhouse Theatre, a very funny play where the three actors kept us entertained for an hour. Two of the actors played several different roles and managed to change costumes really swiftly. The message was that if someone is bullying you, tell someone! (This play focused on cyber bullying, but the message is the same.)Saturday, 12 May 2012
Room 16 Blog now working!
Finally! - the first post for 2012
Term 2 has started with a burst - for the first two weeks we had Miss Hodges and Miss Burgess in our class, College Teachers on their first posting. They loved working with Room 16 and had fun teaching Dance and Drama to the children.
In Week 2 the whole school participated in a drumming workshop called Interactive Rhythm. Each child had their own bongo drum - check out the photos. It was a great experience for everyone.
KITCHEN CHEMISTRY
This term we are thinking about chemical changes that occur when we mix together different food items! We learned that liquids always take the shape of the container that they are in. We learned that solids can be moved around and will not change shape. We found out that you cannot tip steam (a gas) from one container to another because it evaporates.Jelly - adding liquid (water) to solids (jelly crystals) turned the two into a coloured liquid. Then the liquid set and became a solid. It tasked good too!
Question: How can you blow up a balloon without blowing air into it? - we managed to do this by putting baking soda into a balloon, then put this balloon over a bottle half filled with vinegar ...
... the result was hilarious, we observed how two properties mixed together can form a gas!!
